How to Buy Bulk Beef: Everything You Need to Know
At our farm, we pride ourselves on providing high-quality, pasture-raised beef to families who want the best for their meals. Buying bulk beef directly from the source not only ensures that you get a superior product but also gives you control over how it’s packaged and processed. Below, we’ve outlined everything you need to know about purchasing bulk beef from us.
Grass-Finished vs. Grain-Finished
All of our meat is pasture-raised, and we offer both grass-finished and grain-finished beef, allowing you to choose the option that best suits your taste and health preferences.
Grass-Finished: Our grass-fed beef is raised entirely on pasture, from start to finish. This beef has a rich, natural flavor, and is leaner with higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.
Grain-Finished: For those who prefer a slightly fattier and more marbled texture, we also offer grain-finished beef. The cattle are also pasture-raised and are supplemented with non-gmo grain in the final months to enhance the marbling and tenderness.
Both options come from animals raised with the utmost care and commitment to sustainable, humane farming practices.
Pricing
We offer bulk beef in several quantities to fit your family’s needs. You can choose to purchase a whole or half of a cow. Our pricing is based on the hanging weight of the animal, which is the weight after slaughter but before the meat is cut and packaged.
Hanging weight price: $6.00/lb
A half cow can weigh 250-350 lbs. So for 300 lbs at $6.00/lb, a half cow could cost $1,800. The processing expenses are not included and will be calculated later on, typically about $275.
A deposit is required for ordering your whole or half beef and this cost will go toward your full payment. Final payment will be due when you pick up you meat.
Whole beef deposit: $500
Half beef deposit: $250
How to Order (Packaging & Cut Preferences)
When you buy bulk beef from us, you get to decide how you want your meat packaged and cut. This allows you to customize the cuts based on your cooking preferences and freezer space. Whether you prefer steaks, ground beef, roasts, or stew meat, you can specify it on the processor form. You will receive a form to fill out for the meat processor, selecting all your preferences such as:
Thickness of steaks
Size of roasts
How much ground beef you want
Packaging in vacuum-sealed bags for freshness
Things to know:
45% of your order will automatically be ground beef
Timeline
We typically butcher 2 times a year alternating between grass-finished and grain-finished. Check here for when the next cows will be available.
Once your cow goes to the butcher, it takes approximately 2-3 weeks for the beef to be processed, cut, and packaged to your specifications. The timeline may vary depending on the processing schedule and demand. We will keep you updated throughout the process so you know when to expect your order.
How Much Does It Bring?
The amount of meat you receive depends on whether you purchase a whole or half cow. Here’s a general idea of how much you can expect:
Whole Cow: Approximately 400-500 lbs of packaged beef
Half Cow: Approximately 200-250 lbs
This includes a variety of cuts, including steaks, roasts, ground beef, and more. You will need roughly 7-8 cu. ft. freezer space for a half a cow.
How Long Will It Last?
How long your bulk beef lasts depends on your household’s eating habits. On average, a family of four that eats beef 2-3 times per week can expect:
Half cow: Lasts around 6-9 months
Whole cow: Lasts up to a year or more
Properly stored, vacuum-sealed beef can last up to a year or longer in the freezer without losing its quality.
